852. LIBERATION. Vol. IX, No. 10, January, 1965. Left-wing journal, with minor Vietnam-related content. A number of the editors and contributors became prominent in the antiwar movement.

853. LIBERATION. Vol. X, No. 1, March, 1965. Includes a call by SDS for students to march on Washington in April, 1965, to protest the Johnson administration's "anti-popular, illegal, and doomed war in Vietnam." Near fine copy.

854. SALLYPORT. Vol. 27 No. 2, April 1965. (Portland): (Reed College) (1965). "A Special Report: The Reed College Conference on U.S. Policy in Vietnam." Stapled wrappers, 40 pages. An early example of the debate on U.S. policy in academic circles. A good copy.

855. VIET-REPORT. Vol. I, No. 1, July, 1965. "An Emergency News Bulletin on Southeast Asian Affairs." Includes pieces by Bernard Fall, Staughton Lynd and others. Lynd reviews David Halberstam's The Making of a Quagmire and Wilfred Burchett's Vietnam: Inside Story of the Guerrilla War, comparing and contrasting them. Pages yellowed with age, otherwise fine.

856. VIET-REPORT. Vol. I, No 2, August/September, 1965. Second issue of this magazine; reprints the Geneva Agreements of 1954. Books reviewed are Richard Tregaskis's Vietnam Diary and Robin Moore's The Green Berets. Ink markings in text; pages yellowed and brittle. Only good.

857. FILM COMMENT. Vol. IV, No. 1, Fall, 1966. Contains several articles about and transcripts of Viet Cong and Right-Wing American propaganda films. Near fine copy.

858. "U.S. Government Films on the Vietnamese War" in FILM COMMENT, Vol. 5, No. 2. Offprint of what appears to be the manuscript for an article for Film Comment, including a 16-page listing of films available from the U.S. government, with a short description of each. Very good.

859. LIBERATION. Vol. XII, No. 3, May-June, 1967. By this issue, the Vietnam war was clearly the central focus, with the Swedish Tribunal on the war and Dave Dellinger's trip to North Vietnam occupying major portions of the magazine. Near fine copy.

860. BOWDITCH REVIEW, Fall 1967. "Vietnam Survey" issue. Quarto, stapled wrappers. The entire issue of this periodical is devoted to the war in Vietnam. Most of the articles are factual and attempt to inform the American public about what is happening in Vietnam. Allen Ginsberg contributes a poem entitles "from Wichita Vortex Sutra." Very good.

861. LIBERATION. Vol. XII, Nos. 9 & 10, December, 1967 / January, 1968. This double issue is devoted to the second session of the International War Crimes Tribunal, held in Denmark to document U.S. war crimes in Vietnam. Very good copy.

862. WIN. Vol. IV, No. 3, February 15, 1968. Quarto, pictorial wrappers, stapled. A magazine subtitled "Peace and Freedom Through Nonviolent Action." Contains Jerry Rubin's "I Am the Walrus!" and other articles reflective of the student anti-war movement at that time. Very good.

863. THE ANTIOCH REVIEW. Fall/Winter 1970-1971. Vol. 30, Nos. 3 & 4. Burton Tauber contributes "Prospectus: An Offering of 225,000,000 Shares in the War in Viet Nam," an article about the war in the form of an actual prospectus, or business offering. A satire. Very good.

864. WIN. Vol. VIII, Nos. 4 & 5, March, 1971. The entire contents of this double issue is devoted to "The Complete Collection of Political Documents Ripped-Off From the F.B.I. Office in Media, PA, March 8, 1971. Many of the documents relate to surveillance of and cases against antiwar activists. Near fine.

865. COUNTERSPY. Vol. 4 No.3, Summer, 1980. Contains a long article on counter-insurgency in Thailand. Newsprint paper yellowing with age, otherwise fine.

Faint brown staining to lower margin of first few pages otherwise very good. An early, important and ephemeral item; a landmark in the antiwar movement in this country.

911. (Pentagon Papers). THE PENTAGON PAPERS. Bos: Beacon (1971). First edition of this landmark collection, issued in four volumes. The Senator Gravel Edition, consisting of material entered into the Congressional Record by Senator Mike Gravel on June 29, 1971. Also reprinted are a number of documents from the New York Times' account of the study which did not appear in the subcommittee record. Black (remainder) mark on fore-edge of each volume, otherwise they are fine in very good dust jackets. Volume One dj has a faint small dampstain. For the four volumes:

A report based on the author's personal experience, rather than a result of organized RAND research. A few marginal notations, otherwsie a very good copy. Mimeographed, stapled into card covers.

926. Hickey, Gerald C. THE MAJOR ETHNIC GROUPS OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE HIGHLANDS. Santa Monica: RAND, 1964. A sociological and anthropological introduction to the various tribal groups collectively known as the montagnards. Near fine in wraps.

927. Zasloff, J.J. THE ROLE OF THE SANCTUARY IN INSURGENCY: COMMUNIST CHINA'S SUPPORT TO THE VIETMINH, 1946-1954. Santa Monica: RAND, 1967. An attempt to study the problem of outside sanctuary in guerrilla warfare by looking to an earlier example. Near fine.

928. Pohle, Victoria and Constantine Menges. TIME AND LIMITED SUCCESS AS ENEMIES OF THE VIETCONG. Santa Monica: RAND, 1967. A short paper, positing speculatively and optimistically, that a protracted war might hurt the Viet Cong more than the U.S., in terms of morale and the general "supportability" of the war effort. Mimeographed sheets; stapled wrappers. Very good.

929. Ellsberg, Daniel. THE DAY LOC TIEN WAS PACIFIED. Santa Monica: RAND, 1968. A RAND presentation given by Ellsberg, later one of the most famous (or notorious) of the antiwar activists, who leaked the Pentagon Papers. Numerous pages of this mimeographed paper have been partially excised, but the remainder still serves as an interesting glimpse into Ellsberg's activity before his more publicized efforts. A few cover and marginal notations, otherwise very good.

930. Pauker, Guy J. THE FUTURE ROLE OF THE UNITED STATES IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC. Santa Monica: RAND, 1968. Text of a statement made by a RAND Corporation analyst before a House Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs. Fine.

931. Zasloff, J.J. POLITICAL MOTIVATION OF THE VIET CONG: THE VIETMINH REGROUPEES. Santa Monica: RAND, 1968. Later edition of this "memorandum" (180+ pages), originally published in 1966. Interviews with Viet Cong veterans of the Viet Minh. Prophetic and insightful. Near fine.

932. Zasloff, J.J. ORIGINS OF THE INSURGENCY IN SOUTH VIETNAM, 1954-1960: THE ROLE OF THE SOUTHERN VIETMINH CADRES. Santa Monica: RAND, 1968. Later edition, originally published in 1967. Mimeographed sheets; stapled card covers. Pages yellowing and covers fading; numerous marginal notations.

933. Davison, W.P. SOME OBSERVATIONS ON VIET CONG OPERATIONS IN THE VILLAGES. Santa Monica: RAND, 1968. A long (170+ pages) compendium of observations, many of which seem in retrospect amazingly biased: while dwelling on the "ruthless cruelty" of executing village leaders who extorted money from villagers, the report also mentions, almost in passing, the Viet Cong rules of behavior which had "an almost religious quality to them: Study hard and work hard; Lead an orderly, clean, and simple life...; Be considerate of public property..." In the clear light of hindsight, the misplaced emphases here seem so obvious as to strain credulity. Near fine.
