1. House of Fiction. NY: Scribner, 1950. An important short story anthology assembled by Caroline Gordon and her husband, Allen Tate. The collection was dedicated to Max Perkins. This copy bears a handwritten notice on the front free endpaper that it was presented to Morris Gordon, Caroline's brother, by the authors. A well-worn copy in a homemade book jacket. Only good, but a good presentation and an excellent family association.
2. Best Little Magazine Fiction 1970. NY: New York University Press, 1970. The scarce hardcover issue of this uncommon volume, edited by Curt Johnson, publisher of the little magazine, December. Featuring Raymond Carver (Stull B2), Joyce Carol Oates, and the first work of fiction by Rick DeMarinis, among others. Fine in a near fine, price-clipped dust jacket.
3. Free Fire Zone. Short Stories By Vietnam Veterans. Coventry: 1st Casualty (1973). An important anthology, the first such collection of fiction by Vietnam vets, published by a small press run by vets and associated with Vietnam Veterans Against the War. This book provided early or debut appearances for such writers as George Davis (Coming Home), Loyd Little (Parthian Shot), William Pelfrey (The Big V), and David Huddle, among others. This is the true first edition, only issued in wrappers. Later there was a hardcover edition (and another softcover edition) published by McGraw-Hill, but this is the true first. Covers slightly rubbed; near fine.
4. The Man To Send Rain Clouds. NY: Viking (1974). Edited by Kenneth Rosen. The first anthology of fiction by contemporary Native American writers to be published by a mainstream New York publisher, and to bring the work of a number of young Indian writers to a wide general readership. Includes seven stories by Leslie Marmon Silko, including the title story; five by Simon Ortiz; and contributions by Anna Lee Walters, the painter R.C. Gorman, and Opal Lee Popkes, who has lengthily inscribed this copy on the half title. This book went out of print shortly after publication and remained that way until some years later when it was reissued in paperback; now it is considered one of the standard introductory books to the field of Native American literature or multicultural studies. Quite scarce in the first edition. Recipient's name on front flyleaf; else fine in a fine dust jacket.
5. Giant Talk. NY: Random House (1975). An anthology of Third World writings, co-edited and inscribed by Quincy Troupe. Among the hundreds of contributors are Derek Walcott, Toni Cade Bambara, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, Wole Soyinka, Alice Walker, Ralph Ellison, Chinua Achebe, Amiri Baraka, Lucille Clifton, Ernest Gaines, José Donoso, Carlos Fuentes, James Welch, Ray Youngbear, Gabriel García Márquez, Nikki Giovanni and Toni Morrison. An important anthology, the publication of which helped to enable the movement toward multicultural studies. Fine in a near fine dust jacket.

Unbound 8 1/2" x 11" sheets of this collection edited by Stanley Elkin and with stories by John Updike, John Sayles, Donald Barthelme, Grace Paley, Peter Taylor, Mavis Gallant, Elizabeth Hardwick and others. Elkin's introduction bears copyeditor's marks throughout. Minor edgewear to a few pages; else fine.

The scarce hardcover issue of this important collection edited by Tobias Wolff, and including pieces by Raymond Carver, Richard Ford, William Kittredge, Joy Williams, Ann Beattie, Stanley Elkin, John Gardner, Ron Hansen, Jayne Anne Phillips, Richard Yates, and others. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with several short edge tears; the jacket wears poorly as is doesn't fit well.

Fine.
14. Lord John 10. Northridge: Lord John Press, 1988. An impressive anthology celebrating ten years of the Press's existence, collecting pieces by twenty-six contributors written expressly for this volume. Including, and signed by, John Updike, Raymond Carver, James Crumley, Ray Bradbury, William Everson, Jim Harrison, Tess Gallagher, Joyce Carol Oates, James Purdy, Derek Walcott, former President Gerald Ford, and many others. This is the deluxe edition, one of 75 copies quarterbound in leather. A tiny bit of shelfwear to the corners of the spine, otherwise fine, without dust jacket, as issued.
