2. ACHEBE, Chinua. Hopes and Impediments. NY: Doubleday (1989). The uncorrected proof copy of this collection of essays, including a controversial one about Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and a recollection of James Baldwin. Fine in wrappers.
3. AI. Killing Floor. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1979. Her second collection, which was the Lamont Poetry Selection for 1978 of the Academy of American Poets. This is the issue in wrappers, and is inscribed by the author, with a drawing, "Zapata's Horse." Fine.
4. ALEXIE, Sherman. The Business Of Fancydancing. NY: Hanging Loose (1992). The first book of stories and prose poems by this young Native American writer of Spokane/Coeur d'Alene descent. This collection received high praise in a New York Times Book Review article presenting an overview of contemporary American Indian literature, presaging a literary career that has continued to live up to the advance billing. Alexie was selected as one of the Granta 20 best young American authors. His well-received collection of stories, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, was adapted for the highly praised film, Smoke Signals. This title was issued simultaneously in hardcover and softcover; the hardcover was reported to have been issued in an edition of 100 copies, and no copy has turned up on the market, to our knowledge, in years. This is a review copy of the issue in wrappers--which is itself becoming scarce, especially in an advance issue--and is inscribed by the author. Fine.
5. ALVAREZ, A. Hers. NY: Random House (1975). The first American edition of this first novel about a talented and troubled young woman, written by the author of a biography of Sylvia Plath. Signed by the author. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket.
6. AMADO, Jorge. Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon. NY: Knopf, 1962. The first American edition of the most famous work by Brazil's most well-known author. Made into a movie some 20 years later, after it had been adapted into a top-rated Brazilian soap opera. Top stain and top cloth edges a touch faded; near fine in a fine, unfaded dust jacket. A nice copy of a key volume of world literature of the past half-century.
7. ANDREWS, Raymond. Appalachee Red. NY: Dial (1978). Uncorrected proof copy of this African-American author's well-received first book, winner of the James Baldwin Prize. Near fine in wrappers. Scarce.

Wartime anthology of poetry and prose, with contributions by Frank O'Connor, Lawrence Durrell, Rhys Davies, Alex Comfort, Sean O'Faolian, George Barker, Fred Urquhart, and many others. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. A remarkably well-preserved copy of a small, fragile volume.
9. (Anthology). Spontaneous Combustion. NY: Winter House (1972). Eight plays by, among others, Ed Bullins, Adrienne Kennedy, Megan Terry and LeRoi Jones. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with an edge tear at the upper front panel. Signed by Bullins, and inscribed by Kennedy.

A collection of interviews with a number of the most influential writers of a generation: Kurt Vonnegut, Donald Barthelme, John Barth, Joyce Carol Oates, William Gass, John Gardner, Jerzy Kosinski, Susan Sontag, Tom Wolfe, John Hawkes, Ronald Sukenik and Ishmael Reed. Splattered top edge; near fine in a very good, rubbed and heavily spine-sunned dust jacket with light edgewear.

Among the hundreds of contributors are Derek Walcott, Toni Cade Bambara, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, Wole Soyinka, Alice Walker, Ralph Ellison, Chinua Achebe, Amiri Baraka, Lucille Clifton, Ernest Gaines, José Donoso, Carlos Fuentes, James Welch, Ray Youngbear, Gabriel García Márquez, Nikki Giovanni and Toni Morrison. An important anthology, the publication of which helped to enable the movement toward multicultural studies. Fine in near fine jacket.
