Burial Flag for His Father
[1944]. A U.S. flag, folded and mailed to Tate's mother, Betty J. Appleby, after the death of his father, Samuel Vincent Appleby, during a B-17 bombing mission in World War II. Tate (who would later take the surname of his stepfather) was less than a year old when his father died. His first major collection, which was selected for the Yale Series of Younger Poets when Tate was 23, was entitled The Lost Pilot. Original mailing box, with Betty's name and address, and Samuel's name and rank. Condition unverified: very likely in the box for more than 75 years. Free to a good home, or proceeds will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project. [#034370] SOLD
