Self-published "novel" of Vietnam, as much a polemic against the war and the administration as a traditional novel, with characters and plot. This is the stated "second edition" -- which is the first to include both Parts 1 and 2; the first edition, in 1968, was only Part 1. Near fine in wrappers and very scarce.

1292. Blankenship, William D. THE LEAVENWORTH IRREGULARS. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill (1974). Novel of three Vietnam vets planning to rob an Army base payroll. Near fine in dust jacket

1293. Bloodworth, Dennis. ANY NUMBER CAN PLAY. Lon: Secker & Warburg (1972). A novel of espionage in Southeast Asia by this writer most well-known for his nonfiction on the area -- An Eye for the Dragon and The Chinese Looking Glass. This is an uncorrected proof copy, near fine in wrappers. A scarce format of a novel which is uncommon in the original edition.

1300. Bosse, Malcolm. STRICKEN. NY: Dell (1974). First paperback edition of this novel, original published as The Man Who Loved Zoos. A mystery novel, with one prominent character a vet.

1301. Boulle, Pierre. EARS OF THE JUNGLE. NY: Vanguard (1972). A novel of the war by the author of The Bridge Over the River Quai, Planet of the Apes, and others. Owner name and sticker remnant on front endpaper, otherwise fine in very good jacket. Surprisingly uncommon in the first edition.

1302. Boyd, William. ON THE YANKEE STATION. NY: Morrow, 1984. First American edition. A collection of stories, the title story being set on a ship off the coast of Vietnam. Fine in jacket.

1303. Boyer, Rick. THE DAISY DUCKS. Bos: HM, 1986. A "Doc Adams" mystery, which concerns a group of commandos who worked together in Vietnam. Part of the novel takes place there. Fine in fine dust jacket.

1304. Boyne, Walter J. and Steven L. Thompson. THE WILD BLUE. NY: Crown (1986). A novel of the Air Force, from 1948 to the present, partly set in Vietnam during the war. Fine in fine dust jacket.

1306. Branigan, Cat. WINGS OVER NAM - CHOPPER PILOT. NY: Popular (1989). Paperback original, the first in a series. According to the cover copy, the author was a captain in the Air Force during and after the Vietnam conflict, and is "the author of dozens of authentic Vietnam novels."

1308. Briley, Jonathan. THE TRAITORS. NY: Putnam (1969). A novel of a group of U.S. soldiers captured in Vietnam and indoctrinated by a defector. Fine in dust jacket.

1309. Britton, Christopher. PAYBACKS. NY: Donald I. Fine (1985). A courtroom drama of a Marine DI court-martialed for a murder he didn't commit. The author was a Marine in Vietnam and a military defense counsel. Fine in fine dust jacket.

1310. Brodeur, Paul. THE STUNT MAN. Lon: The Bodley Head (1970). First English edition of this novel of a deserter who gets involved in a film about a deserter. Made into an effective film with Peter O'Toole. Fine in fine dust jacket.

1311. Brossard, Chandler. WAKE UP. WE'RE ALMOST THERE. NY: Baron, 1970. Uncorrected proof copy oif this novel, which takes place partly in Vietnam. Broassard is a stylist who is most well-known for his seminal Beat novel, Who Walk in Darkness. Very good in tall wrappers.

1330. Butler, Robert Olen. THE ALLEYS OF EDEN. NY: Horizon (1981). The author's well-received first book, set partly in Saigon as the war is winding down, and partly in the U.S., just afterward. This is a fine copy in lightly rubbed dust jacket and signed by the author.

His fourth book, a novel of a U.S. intelligence officer who kidnaps and frees from U.S. custody a Viet Cong officer, and who later returns to Vietnam looking for a son he believes he had fathered there some years back. This copy with a warm, personal inscription from the author to a prominent book reviewer. Fine in dust jacket.

In the humble opinion of this amateur book reviewer, a high point of the literature of the war -- a book which at times captures in single, piercing sentences more insight than some good novels manage to convey in their entirety. Very scarce, as virtually all copies of these titles appear to have gone to libraries rather than into the retail book trade.

1348. Cain, Jonathan. SAIGON COMMANDOS. NY: Zebra (1983). First edition, paperback original, the first in this series of adventure novels of the Vietnam war. The paperback adventure series spawned by the Vietnam war represent a publishing phenomenon of unprecedented proportions. Very fine.

1361. Caputo, Philip. HORN OF AFRICA. NY: HRW (1980). Second book and first novel by author Caputo, who wrote A Rumor of War. A novel of mercenaries in Africa, with no explicit Vietnam connection, but the overtones of Conrad and of the kinds of moral dilemmas which the Vietnam war novels of that time were beginning to confront are so striking that it would seem foolish not to include this with the literature of the war. 1381. Cassidy, John. A STATION IN THE DELTA. NY: Scribner's (1979). The author's first book, a novel of the CIA in Vietnam; the author served in Vietnam as an Operations Officer in the Clandestine Service for the CIA. Fine in fine dust jacket.

1384. Chandler, David. CAPTAIN HOLLISTER. NY: Macmillan (1973). Second printing. Black comedy about an officer who returns to Vietnam after being away for five years, and in disillusion with the way the war is being handled breaks rank with the Army in an attempt to redeem his own humanity. This is a fine copy in a near fine dust jacket.

1385. Chaplin, Gordon. JOYRIDE. NY: CM&G (1982). Author's first book, about two adolescents who take a "joyride" through Southeast Asia at the height of the war. Fine in dust jacket.

1386. Chesbro, George C. TWO SONGS THIS ARCHANGEL SINGS. NY: Atheneum, 1986. A mystery novel, featuring dwarf detective "Mongo" and introducing his friend, an artist and Vietnam veteran, "Veil Kendry." Kendry's art springs from his "vivid dreaming", a near-supernatural capability which also made him a successful and feared warrior in Vietnam. Numerous exploits of his are recounted, and the title refers to a secret Project he was involved with there. Fine in dust jacket.

1387. Chesbro, George C. VEIL. NY: Mysterious (1986). The second novel featuring Veil Kendry, this also recounts his experiences in Vietnam. Fine in fine dust jacket.

1389. Chivas-Baron, Cl. THREE WOMEN OF ANNAM. NY: Frank-Maurice, 1925. A novel of Vietnam, written by a French writer, a member of the French Academy. This is a near fine copy without dust jacket. A very early example of a novel about Vietnam by a Westerner.

1390. Clark, Alan. THE LION HEART. NY: Morrow, 1969. A novel of the war written by a military historian. This copy has a tiny bit of staining at the upper edge of the dust jacket flaps, and on the endpapers there, otherwise fine in price-clipped dust jacket.

1391. Clark, Johnnie. SEMPER FIDELIS. NY: Ballantine (1988). Paperback original, a novel of Marines in Vietnam. Fine in wrappers.

1392. Coetzee, J.M. DUSKLANDS. Johannesburg: Raven, 1974. First book by this noted South African writer, later a winner of the Booker Prize. Two novellas, including "The Vietnam Project" which deals with a researcher investigating the effectiveness of U.S. propaganda and psychological warfare in Vietnam. The true first edition, preceding its British publication by seven years, and American by eleven. This is a fine copy in a fine dust jacket. A very scarce book by an important writer.
