EAGLE, D. Chief
Winter Count
(Colorado Springs), (Dentan-Berkeland), (1967. The first edition (Dentan-Berkeland publisher), inscribed by the author in 1969. Note: with the dust jacket of the later edition (Johnson Publishing) and with a Johnson Publishing promotional flyer laid in: possibly a hybrid used as an advance copy. Also laid in is a signed photographic postcard. A historical novel written by a Native American writer, prior to the so-called Native American renaissance which began with N. Scott Momaday's House Made of Dawn in 1968, and took root through the 1970s and into the 1980s. It has been argued that prior to Momaday's book, there were only nine novels written by Native authors, this being one of them. Fine in a near fine, spine-faded dust jacket.
