(Norwich), (n.p.), (1972). Posthumously published poetry by O'Donnell, a helicopter pilot killed in action in Vietnam in 1970. Introduced (and published?) by Mike Maloney. One of the poems within (untitled, but sometimes referred to as the "gentle heroes" poem) developed a life of its own, even while O'Donnell's remains waited to be repatriated (1995) and identified (2001). The poem was recited during the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, appeared during the closing credits of the film "Hamburger Hill," and has been inscribed on monuments and recited during Veterans Day and Memorial Day addresses.
