Passage
Big Sur, Jonathan Williams, 1956. McClure's first book, published as Jargon 20, in an edition of 200 copies. Modest foxing to pages; near fine in saddle-stitched wrappers. Publisher's prospectus laid in, which includes an excerpt of a letter from William Carlos Williams to the publisher, Jonathan Williams, recounting that one of the poems, "For the Death of 100 Whales," "filled me with terror... It should be forced down the throats of polite poetry journals..." The prospectus also prints the poem in its entirety. A very nice copy, particularly with the ephemeral promotional piece laid in.
