Dispatches is the most acclaimed work of reporting of the Vietnam War and was the only book to be reprinted in its entirety in the Library of America's Reporting Vietnam: American Journalism 1969-1975. Stone admired Dispatches: Herr's time in Vietnam partly coincided with his own, and no other reporter captured the time, place and ambiance the way Herr did -- mostly by letting the voices of the participants tell their stories.
