This was the first novel to win the John Burroughs Medal since the award's inception, in 1926 (in 1928, the award was given to a book of poetry). In 2011, Doyle had won the John Burroughs Association's Essay Award for "The Creature Beyond the Mountains." This copy is signed by Doyle who died in May 2017, at the age of 60.
