In Watermelon Sugar
San Francisco, Four Seasons Foundation, (1968). One of the three dedication copies of this lyrical book that defies easy categorization: a novel in the form of a number of short, related prose poems. Some have called this Brautigan's best book, arguing that the style he invented in Trout Fishing in America was perfected in this book. "Writing 21" in the Four Seasons Foundation series, dedicated: "This novel is for Don Allen, Joanne Kyger and Michael McClure." Inscribed by Brautigan: "This copy is for Joanne [drawing of a trout]/ Richard Brautigan/ December 13, 1968." A September 1963 snapshot of Brautigan's daughter, Ianthe, is laid in, along with a copy of Lew Welch's review of the book from the San Francisco Sunday Examiner & Chronicle. Kyger's reminiscences of hearing Brautigan read the manuscript of In Watermelon Sugar over two Saturdays in 1965, at Buzz Gallery, appear in John Barber's book Richard Brautigan. Light rubbing and even lighter foxing; near fine in wrappers. The scarcest issue of one of Brautigan's most important titles. [#030101] SOLD
