The Goon Platoon
NY, Carlton Press, (1981). A vanity press "novel" about a reservist during the Vietnam war. Only 40 pages long, it reads like a nonfiction memoir of the author's time in the military and the exploits of his group of friends who called themselves the Goon Platoon. The Vietnam war forms the backdrop to the story, and joining the reserves was a strategy for giving oneself a chance to avoid the war altogether if one were called up: there would be time to consider one's options and, if need be, leave for Canada. Vanity press books like this were publications that the authors underwrote themselves and were then supposedly distributed by the publisher. A 1980s class action suit, however, determined that most of the books published in this way had never been distributed at all, and the only copies that ever made it to the public were the ones the authors themselves had given away or sold. The net effect is that they are very scarce, with few copies ever having left the publisher's warehouse until such time as they were disposed of. Red ink to top extreme top board edges; else fine in a very good, well-rubbed dust jacket with light edge chipping. [#029852] SOLD
