Autograph Letter Signed
1963. December 15, 1963. A fan letter from Salinger to Susan Black, regarding her piece in The New Yorker. "Dear Miss Black - Only to say that my wife and I both thoroughly relished the two-parter on Burglary. I hope you will always do subjects that intrigue you, absorb you. Anyway, congratulations and best wishes. J.D. Salinger." He then adds: "Good writing and good burglary are pretty much alike, maybe you'd agree. I suppose I mean enjoyable writing, relishable writing - 'good' doesn't mean anything very explicit." An interesting, if somewhat ambiguous comment by Salinger on writing (at least) and on burglary (perhaps). The recipient had written a two-part piece on Burglary in The New Yorker in December, 1963, the second part having been published in the issue dated one day before the date of this letter. She later won a Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for a book derived from another long New Yorker piece she wrote, Is There No Place on Earth for Me? Written on blue paper, folded for mailing; fine, with a hand-addressed envelope included. [#028106] SOLD
