An early novel of the war, about a highly trained and educated South Vietnamese colonel, and the corruption and betrayal of the values he's fighting for which he witnesses. An important novel, both for its early date -- and the criticisms of the conduct of the war that it reflects at that time -- and for its Vietnamese perspective. Fine in near fine dust jacket.

2054. Wilson, William. THE LBJ BRIGADE. LA: Apocalypse, 1966. Early novel of combat in Vietnam which "chronicles the swift, brutal education of a young American soldier in Vietnam." One of the scarcest novels of the war, published by a small publisher which may have only existed to do this one book. Later reprinted in paperback, this is, as Newman points out, one of the earliest novels to have such an overpowering antiwar message. Near fine copy in a very good, slightly edgeworn dust jacket.

2067. Wolff, Tobias. UGLY RUMOURS. Lon: Allen & Unwin (1975). The author's first novel, set in Vietnam, about a Special Forces lieutenant and a sergeant serving as advisor to a Vietnamese Infantry Division. One of the scarcest books of the war: not published in this country, and the author has pointedly refused to list it among his "previous publications" on his later books. Reportedly done in a first printing of 1000 copies, few of which have surfaced. Wolff is now one of the most highly regarded short story writers in America, and a novel by him on the war is a notable contribution to the body of literature. An exceedingly scarce book which is so far unavailable in any other form than as a collectible first edition. Fine in fine dust jacket.
