245. HALL, Donald. Principal Products of Portugal. Boston: Beacon Press (1995). Uncorrected proof copy of this collection of prose pieces by the noted poet. Fine in wrappers.

246. HALL, James W. Tropical Freeze. NY: Norton (1989). Advance reading copy of the second of his successful Florida mysteries. Fine in wrappers.

247. HALL, James W. Bones of Coral. NY: Knopf, 1991. Advance reading copy of the third mystery by this Florida author, who had published poetry and literary fiction before turning to the hardboiled mystery genre. Fine in wrappers.

248. HANNAH, Barry. Airships. NY: Knopf, 1978. Uncorrected proof copy. Hannah's third book and first collection of stories. The front cover bears a typewritten notice declaring this book to be the "First Winner of the Arnold Gingrich Short Fiction Award," sponsored by Esquire magazine and Alfred A. Knopf. Fine in wrappers.

249. HANNAH, Barry. The Tennis Handsome. NY: Knopf, 1983. Uncorrected proof copy of a short novel by this southern writer, whose flair for the grotesque has been compared to Flannery O'Connor's. Near fine in wrappers with publicity material stapled inside front cover.

250. HANNAH, Barry. Captain Maximus. NY: Knopf, 1985. Uncorrected proof copy of this collection of stories. Wrappers lightly soiled; otherwise fine.

251. HARRISON, Jim. Legends of the Fall. (NY): Delacorte (n.d.)(1979). Uncorrected proof copy of this collection of the three novellas Legends of the Fall, Revenge, The Man Who Gave Up His Name. The title novella is the basis for the well-received film. Fine in wrappers.

252. HARRISON, Kathryn. Poison. NY: Random House (1995). Uncorrected proof copy of her highly original and acclaimed third book, a historical novel set during the Spanish Inquisition. Fine in wrappers.

253. HEARON, Shelby. Life Estates. NY: Knopf, 1994. Uncorrected proof copy. Fine in wrappers.

254. HEINLEIN, Robert. Assignment in Eternity. Reading: Tantasy (1953). Unbound, uncut signatures of this collection of four long stories by this science fiction master, winner of virtually every major science fiction award, including a Lifetime Achievement award. An early book for him--his first novel was in 1947, and he was prolific through the Sixties and Seventies and into the Eighties. A fine set. Presumably quite rare.

255. HELLER, Joseph. Catch-22. NY: Simon & Schuster, 1961. Advance reading copy of the author's landmark first book--a novel whose title has become a part of the language. This copy has a previous owner's name and date (1961) on the first blank and an ephemeral publisher's information card laid in. We have seen no other copy of this that retained the publisher's card. Very good in wrappers that are mildly spine-tanned.

256. HELLER, Joseph. God Knows. NY: Knopf, 1984. Fourth novel by the author of Catch-22. Uncorrected proof copy. Near fine in lightly soiled yellow wrappers and inscribed by the author.

257. HELLER, Joseph. Closing Time. NY: Simon & Schuster (1994). The uncorrected proof copy of his sequel, after 33 years, to Catch-22. Fine in wrappers.

258. HELPRIN, Mark. Memoir from Antproof Case. NY: Harcourt Brace (1995). Uncorrected proof copy of his most recent novel. Fine in wrappers.

259. HIAASEN, Carl and MONTALBANO, William D. Powder Burn. NY: Atheneum, 1981. Uncorrected proof copy of the first collaboration between these two writers, and Hiaasen's first venture into the mystery genre. This is a near fine copy in printed wrappers, in a very good proof dust jacket. An uncommon book even in the trade first edition; this is the only copy of the proof we have encountered.

260. HIAASEN, Carl. Double Whammy. NY: Putnam's (1983). Uncorrected proof copy of his second mystery, which takes as its target--in addition to the usual crooked politicians and greedy developers of his other novels--the entire bass fishing industry. Fine in wrappers and signed by the author.

261. -. Another copy. Spine slant, shallow creasing to front wrapper, and a short tear at upper front spine fold. Very good.

262. HIAASEN, Carl. Strip Tease. NY: Knopf, 1993. Advance reading copy of the fifth of the author's comic mysteries set in south Florida. Made into a movie with Demi Moore. Fine in wrappers.

263. HIGGINS, Aidan. Balcony of Europe. (NY): Delacorte/Lawrence (1973). The author's magnum opus, compared before publication to the work of Joyce. This is the uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition, which consists of the uncorrected proof copy of the British edition with the name of the British publisher, Calder & Boyars, inked out and replaced on the front wrap and spine. Paper clip imprint on front wrap and first few pages; near fine.

264. HIGGINS, George V. A City on a Hill. NY: Knopf, 1975. Uncorrected proof copy, inscribed by the author: "____/ Where the/ hell did you/ get this?" Fine in wrappers.

265. HIGGINS, George V. The Judgement of Deke Hunter. Boston: Little Brown (1976). Uncorrected proof copy. Inscribed by the author: "For ____/ _______ --/ Goddamned if I/ know why, let alone/ how, you cop these/ things." Inscription is written over (agency?) stamp. Lower outer page edges shelf soiled at corner; else fine in wrappers.

266. HIJUELOS, Oscar. The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love. (n.p.): Farrar Straus & Giroux (1989). Advance reading copy of this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. In contrast to his first book, which was published by one of the smallest of the mainstream New York trade publishers, this novel had a first printing indicated to be 40,000 copies, and an initial advertising budget of $50,000--both very high numbers for a relatively little-known writer. Thus, the first trade edition is not especially scarce, whereas the advance copy was probably issued in numbers of 1000 or so. Fine in wrappers.

267. HILLERMAN, Tony. Words, Weather and Wolfmen. Gallup: Southwesterner Books, 1989. 1/10 advance proof copies signed by Hillerman, Ernest Franklin and Ernie Bulow. An interview with Hillerman, essay by him and a Jim Chee story, illustrated by Ernest Franklin. Quarterbound in leather; fine in slipcase. A very scarce issue of this title.

268. HILLERMAN, Tony. Coyote Waits. NY: Harper & Row (1990). The uncorrected proof copy of this Chee/Leaphorn mystery. Printed from word-processed typescript. Near fine in wrappers.

269. HILLERMAN, Tony. Sacred Clowns. (NY): HarperCollins (1993). Uncorrected proof copy of this Navajo mystery, which reportedly had a 350,000 copy first printing. This proof was issued after the advance reading copy in illustrated wrappers and incorporates changes to the text from that earlier edition. Thus, this is the first appearance of this version of the text, which coincides with the final published version. Fine in wrappers.

270. -. Same title, the advance reading copy in pictorial wrappers. A sizable number of these were done, for promotional giveaway; they are significant not so much because of scarcity as because the text was later changed and this advance reading copy represents the only "publication" of this version of the text. Fine.

271. (HILLERMAN, Tony). The Mysterious West. (NY): HarperCollins (1994). Uncorrected proof copy of this collection edited by Hillerman. Stories by Bill Pronzini, Stuart Kaminsky, and others. Fine in wrappers.

272. (HILLERMAN, Tony). GREENBERG, Martin, ed. The Tony Hillerman Companion. (NY): HarperCollins (1994). Uncorrected proof copy of this "comprehensive guide to his life and work," which includes essays on his writing, an interview, a guide to the Navajo Nation and Native American clans, and a concordance of the characters in his fiction. In addition, several previously uncollected pieces of Hillerman's nonfiction and fiction are included. Fine in wrappers.

273. HILLS, Rick. Limbo River. (Pittsburgh): U. of Pittsburgh Press (1990). Uncorrected proof copy. Winner of the 1990 Drue Heinz Literature Prize for short fiction, chosen by Russell Banks. Fine in wrappers.

274. HJORTSBERG, William. Falling Angel. NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1978. Uncorrected proof copy of the author's fifth book, a novel which has a cult following all its own and was also the basis for a well-received movie, Angel Heart, which itself has a cult following. This proof was issued in tall wrappers and the original title, "Falling Angels" (with an "s") has been changed on both the title page and the front cover. Near fine in wrappers. Uncommon.

275. HJORTSBERG, William. Nevermore. NY: Atlantic Monthly (1994). Advance reading copy. A well-received literary thriller by the author of Falling Angel (filmed as Angel Heart). Fine in wrappers.

276. HOAGLAND, Edward. Red Wolves and Black Bears. NY: Random House (1976). Uncorrected proof copy. His third collection of essays, many of them focusing on the natural world. Fine in tall wrappers.

277. HOAGLAND, Edward. The Tugman's Passage. NY: Random House (1982). Uncorrected proof copy. Near fine in wrappers.

278. HOAGLAND, Edward. Seven Rivers West. NY: Summit (1986). Uncorrected proof copy of this novel, on which the author reportedly worked for 20 years--i.e., the time since his last previous novel. There was an advance reading copy done of this novel- -which was a major publishing event of the season--but this proof seems to have been done in relatively small numbers. Fine in wrappers.

279. HOAGLAND, Edward. Heart's Desire. NY: Summit (1988). Uncorrected proof copy of this "best of" collection of essays spanning twenty years. Fine in wrappers.

280. HOEG, Peter. Border Liners. NY: FSG (1994). Two states of the advance reading copy, one earlier, with a simpler design and no blurbs on the rear panel; the other later, more like the finished book, and with blurbs. By the author of the highly acclaimed surprise bestseller, Smilla's Sense of Snow. A nice example of the evolving efforts to present a book for publication. Fine in wrappers. For the two:

281. HOFFMAN, Alice. Second Nature. NY: Putnam (1994). Advance reading copy of this novel, a highly praised tale of a contemporary "werewolf." Fine in wrappers.

282. HOLLAND, Noy. The Spectacle of the Body. NY: Knopf, 1994. Uncorrected proof copy. A well-received collection of stories, the author's first book. Fine in wrappers.

283. HONGO, Garrett. Volcano. A Memoir of Hawai'i. NY: Knopf, 1995. Uncorrected proof copy of this poet's memoir. Fine in wrappers.

284. HOOD, Mary. Familiar Heat. NY: Knopf, 1995. Uncorrected proof copy of her first novel after two well-received story collections, one of which won the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction. Near fine in wrappers.

285. HORNBURG, Michael. Bongwater. NY: Grove (1995). Uncorrected proof copy of this first novel set among the youth of Portland, Oregon--a look at the grunge subculture that is, in effect, an updating of the "Dharma Bums" tales of the Beat generation. Fine in wrappers.

286. HOSPITAL, Janette Turner. The Ivory Swing. (Toronto): McLelland & Stewart (1982). Uncorrected proof copy of her first book, winner of the 1981 Seal First Novel Award; very near fine in spiralbound cardstock covers.

287. HOWATCH, Susan. Absolute Truths. NY: Knopf, 1995. Uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition of this book, the sixth in a sequence that began with Glittering Images. Fine in wrappers.

288. HUGO, Richard. Death and the Good Life. NY: St. Martin's (1981). Uncorrected proof copy of the poet's only novel, a murder mystery which received surprisingly good reviews. Fine in wrappers. Very scarce in proof format.

289. IRVING, John. The World According to Garp. NY: Dutton (1978). Advance reading copy of the author's fourth novel, and his breakthrough book. The first printing of Garp was reported at 35,000 copies; none of Irving's previous books had sold even 5,000 copies, with one of them having had sales under 2000. Irving switched publishers for this book, and his new publisher decided to promote the novel heavily. After issuing two sets of proofs in small numbers for early readers and reviewers, Dutton printed this advance reading copy for wide distribution to the book trade. It worked in bringing attention to Irving's novel, which became a bestseller and National Book Award finalist (it won a watered-down version of the "American Book Awards" the next year as a paperback reprint). Since then, Irving's books have had six-figure first printings and his reputation as one of the major novelists working in America today has been secure. The publisher's risk, in producing such a large first printing, and their marketing efforts--including creating this advance copy--played no small part in this transformation. Spine-creasing; else fine in wrappers and signed by the author. A nice copy. Irving has been declining to sign books in recent years, as the press of commercial success and its attendant celebrity weighs on him. Signed copies of his earlier books are becoming increasingly scarce.

290. -. Another copy, unsigned. Very good.

291. IRVING, John. The Hotel New Hampshire. NY: Dutton (1981). Uncorrected proof copy of the author's fifth book, which was also made into a movie. Fine in wrappers, with publisher's errata sheet laid in.

292. -. Same title, the uncorrected proof copy of the first British edition (London: Cape, 1981). Near fine in wrappers.

293. IRVING, John. A Son of the Circus. NY: Random House (1994). Uncorrected proof copy of his most recent novel. The first page, which contained the Random House catalogue copy describing the book and the author, has been excised, reportedly at the author's request. Otherwise this is a fine, unread copy in wrappers and signed by the author for the Random House sales force, to whom these were given for promotional use.

294. -. Another copy, unsigned, but also fine in wrappers with excised page.

295. ISHIGURO, Kazuo. The Unconsoled. London: Faber & Faber (1995). The advance reading copy (marked "Uncorrected Proof") of the first edition of his latest novel. Reportedly very few copies of this proof were prepared. Fine in wrappers and signed by the author.

296. JAMES, Kelvin Christopher. Secrets. NY: Villard, 1993. Advance reading copy of the Caribbean author's second book, first novel, after a highly praised collection of stories. Fine in wrappers.

297. JANOWITZ, Tama. The Male Cross-Dresser Support Group. NY: Crown (1992). Uncorrected proof copy of this novel by the author of Slaves of New York, among others. Small nick to front panel; else fine in wrappers and signed by the author on the front cover.

298. JARRELL, Randall. Pictures from an Institution. NY: Knopf, 1954. Uncorrected proof copy of his only novel. Near fine in printed wrappers.

299. -. Another copy, well-worn: spine slanted, wrappers edgeworn with a tear at the bottom of the front joint. Overall, only in fair shape.

300. JONES, Matthew. The Elements of Hitting. (NY): (Hyperion) (1994). Uncorrected proof copy. Second novel, a baseball book, by a writer whose first was compared to John Irving and Joyce Carol Oates. Fine in wrappers.

301. JONG, Erica. Fear of Flying. NY: HRW (1973). Uncorrected proof copy of her landmark first novel. Fear of Flying redefined the parameters for acceptable commercial fiction in the wake of the newfound freedoms of the Sixties and the women's movement, so much so that its title became a byword and a part of the vernacular of contemporary political discussion. Faint edge stain along first couple of leaves, otherwise fine. Publisher's info sheet laid in. Inscribed by the author: "For ____, Who flies, love, Erica." A nice copy of the proof of an influential book.

302. JONG, Erica. How to Save Your Own Life. NY: HRW (1977). Uncorrected proof copy of her first novel after the phenomenal success of Fear of Flying. Inscribed by the author on the front cover in the year of publication: "For ___ - in the hopes that your life is already saved! affectionately - Erica." A Burgess 99 title. Near fine in tall wrappers.

303. JUST, Ward. Ambition and Love. Boston/NY: Hougton Mifflin, 1994. Advance reading copy of this novel. Fine in wrappers.

304. JUSTICE, Donald. New and Selected Poems. NY: Knopf, 1995. Uncorrected proof copy. Fine in wrappers.
