555. SHAARA, Michael. The Killer Angels. NY: McKay (1974). Advance reading copy in plain printed wrappers of the author's second novel, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and, according to many, the best novel about the Civil War battle of Gettysburg, and, with Stephen Crane's Red Badge of Courage, one of the best Civil War novels ever written. A few spots on the bottom page edges; near fine in wrappers. This book formed the basis for the cable TV movie/minseries, Gettysburg. The first edition is exceptionally scarce for a book of this vintage; the advance copy perhaps even more so.

562. SHARPE, Tom. Porterhouse Blue. London: Secker & Warburg (1974). Advance copy of the author's second novel consisting of typeset sheets bound into plain yellow wrappers, with publisher's label affixed to front cover. Near fine copy, and quite scarce.

563. SHAW, Irwin. Rich Man, Poor Man. NY: Delacorte Press (1970). Uncorrected proof copy of what is probably, after The Young Lions, his most famous work, due to the television miniseries that was derived from it. Two volumes, in tall, ringbound wrappers. Signed by Shaw on the front cover of Volume 1. Some darkening to the rear panel of Volume 2; else fine. Uncommon.

564. SHAW, Irwin. God Was Here But He Left Early. NY: Arbor (1973). Proof copy of the collection of short fiction by the author of The Young Lions, and others. Extremely tall, pad-bound proofs, a very fragile format, as evidenced by the fact that the rear panel is missing from this copy; thus only good. Scarce.

Two Advance Issues of a John Steinbeck Classic

586. STEINBECK, John and RICKETTS, E.F. Sea of Cortez. NY: Viking, 1941. Uncorrected proof copy of this lengthy account of an expedition to the Gulf of California by Steinbeck and Ricketts, a marine biologist. A fine copy in plain brown self-wrappers; a very scarce edition. Although Goldstone & Payne identified this as "first edition, the issue in wrappers," Bradford Morrow's landmark Steinbeck catalogue in 1980 pointed out that this was in fact an advance issue, which prints Steinbeck's text but not the scientific Appendix that appears in the trade edition. In custom folding chemise and slipcase.

587. -. Same title, this being a salesman's promotional dummy copy. The top edge is stained green rather than the orange of the published book. The dust jacket is blank on the flaps and rear panel. Prints two pages from the Introduction, 4 pages from Chapter Two (later incorporated into Chapter 4 in the finished book), and minor extracts from the Appendix, which were altered prior to publication. All the other pages are blank. Near fine in darkened dust jacket. Salesman's dummies were done in very small quantities, and dummies of books by major 20th Century authors very seldom turn up on the market. In a custom quarter leather slipcase and chemise.

588. STEINBECK, John. Working Days. NY: Viking (1988). Uncorrected proof copy of this posthumous publication of Steinbeck's journals from the period when he was writing The Grapes of Wrath. Fine in wrappers.

589. STOKES, Terry. Crimes of Passion. NY: Knopf, 1973. Uncorrected proof copy. Fine in wrappers, and inscribed by the author in 1974.

Two Issues of National Book Award Winner

590. STONE, Robert. Dog Soldiers. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1974. Uncorrected proof copy of the author's second book, co-winner of the National Book Award and basis for the movie Who'll Stop the Rain? A powerful, darkly comic novel that is one of the best explorations of the dark side of American culture in the aftermath of the 1960s and the Vietnam war. This is the first issue proof, in plain orange printed wrappers. A near fine copy, signed by the author.

591. -. Same title, second issue proof, in brown wrappers with a publisher's letter to booksellers reproduced on the front cover. Stone's first book won the Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Award; this, his second, won the National Book Award; his third, A Flag for Sunrise, won the PEN/Faulkner Award. This copy has a detached first blank, otherwise is near fine in wrappers and has the publisher's original reply postcard laid in. Signed by the author.

One of his few short stories that has not been incorporated into a novel. Other contributors include Erdrich, Bass, Carver and Tobias Wolff. Fine in wrappers, and signed by Stone.

The first book appearance of this essay by Stone on the 1988 Republican National Convention in New Orleans. Other contributors include Julian Barnes, Annie Dillard, Stanley Elkin, Richard Ford, William Kittredge, Edward Hoagland, Joan Didion, etc. Fine in wrappers.
