553. UPDIKE, John. The Witches of Eastwick. NY: Knopf, 1984. The uncorrected proof copy of Updike's suburban fantasy, made into a movie with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. Chosen by British critic David Pringle as one of the hundred best fantasy novels of the postwar era. This is the first issue proof, which contains passages that were not in the later proof or in the published book. Fine, in red wrappers.

554. -. Same title. This is the second issue proof, in mauve wrappers with text revised from the red-wrappered first issue proof. Fine.

558. UPDIKE, John. Just Looking. NY: Knopf, 1989. The uncorrected proof copy of this heavily illustrated collection of essays on art. Quarto. Covers scuffed; about near fine in wrappers. Generally, proofs in this format are done in smaller quantities than the standard octavo bound proofs.

559. UPDIKE, John. Self-Consciousness. NY: Knopf, 1989. The uncorrected proof copy of his first volume of autobiography. Fine in wrappers.

560. UPDIKE, John. Rabbit at Rest. NY: Knopf, 1990. The uncorrected proof copy of the concluding volume of the award-winning Rabbit Angstrom saga, one of the most highly praised fictional sequences of our time. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. The announced first printing of the trade edition was 125,000 copies. The proof may be as much as 1000 times scarcer. Fine in wrappers.

561. -. Same title. The advance reading copy. Signed by the author. Fine in wrappers and publisher's folding cardboard box.

562. UPDIKE, John. Memories of the Ford Administration. NY: Knopf, 1992. The uncorrected proof copy. Fine in wrappers.

565. UPDIKE, John. Brazil. NY: Knopf, 1994. The uncorrected proof copy of this novel that was something of a departure for Updike, being far removed from the familiar suburban milieu of most of his fiction. Fine in wrappers, with jacket art stapled inside the front cover.

566. UPDIKE, John. In the Beauty of the Lilies. NY: Knopf, 1996. The uncorrected proof copy of the first trade edition. Signed by the author. Fine in wrappers.

With stories by Andre Dubus, Paul Bowles, Madison Smartt Bell, Mavis Gallant, Susan Minot, Joyce Carol Oates, Cynthia Ozick, Lowry Pei, Jonathan Penner, Norman Rush and James Salter, among others. Very near fine in wrappers.

568. VONNEGUT, Kurt, Jr. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, Or Pearls Before Swine. NY: HRW (1965). The uncorrected proof copy of Vonnegut's sixth book, one of the novels that began to earn him a small but passionate following in the mid-1960s, before his breakthrough to the status of "major author," which came when Slaughterhouse-Five was published. This is the earliest state of the proof: tall sheets ringbound in blue wrappers, printed on rectos only. Cardstock covers abraded and spotted; very good, in a custom quarter leather clamshell box. The later issue proof, also ringbound, was in beige wrappers. This copy is signed by the author in 1996, with a self-caricature. One of the earliest Vonnegut proofs we have seen, possibly the earliest.

569. VONNEGUT, Kurt, Jr. Welcome to the Monkey House. London: Jonathan Cape (1969). The uncorrected proof copy of the first British edition of these short stories, a collection reprising most of the stories in Canary in a Cat House plus fourteen others. Signed by the author in 1997 with a self-caricature. Wrappers creased; light foxing to foredge and rubbing to folds; very good in wrappers. Scarce: Vonnegut proofs from the Sixties, before he was widely accepted as a mainstream writer, are uncommon.

570. VONNEGUT, Kurt, Jr. Slaughterhouse-Five. London: Jonathan Cape (1970). The uncorrected proof copy of the first British edition of Vonnegut's masterwork. Signed by the author with a self-caricature in 1997. Spine- and edge-darkened with a few creases and a small ink spot at the spine base. Very good in wrappers. A scarce proof; we have only seen one copy of the American edition and two copies of this edition offered on the market.

571. VONNEGUT, Kurt. Unpublished Interview. [n.p.: n.p., c.1973]. Galley sheets of an unpublished interview with Vonnegut by Loree Rackstraw and Jerome Klinkowitz, who later compiled the Vonnegut bibliography. Seven galleys, each 4" x 24", folded in half. Signed by Vonnegut in 1996. A lengthy interview with Vonnegut, which never saw print, this being presumably one of the very few copies of this printed text in existence, possibly the only copy. Fine.

572. VONNEGUT, Kurt, Jr. Wampeters, Foma & Granfalloons. (NY): Delacorte (1974). The uncorrected proof copy of this collection of essays, speeches and opinions. Spine slightly faded; near fine in wrappers.

573. VONNEGUT, Kurt. Slapstick. (n.p.): Delacorte Press/Lawrence (1976). The uncorrected proof copy of the trade edition. Very good in green wrappers. The cover, the title page and the copyright page still bear the name Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. There was a later issue in yellow wrappers that dropped the "Jr."

574. -. Same title. The second issue proof, in yellow wrappers, which drops the "Jr." This copy is warmly inscribed by the author in the month after publication (and incidentally on the author's birthday): "For ____ -- / THE SORT OF/ AFFECTIONATE,/ ZONKED OUT/ SUPER SPECIALIST/ WHO MAKES NEW/ YORK THE CAPITAL/ OF THE WORLD./ Kurt Vonnegut/ Nov. 11, 1976." A great inscription to a well-known book collector, reflecting Vonnegut's recognition of the collector's obsession. Fine in wrappers.

575. VONNEGUT, Kurt. Galapagos. (NY): Delacorte Press (1985). The uncorrected proof copy. Faint pink spot to cover; else fine in wrappers.

576. VONNEGUT, Kurt. Timequake. NY: Putnam (1997). The advance reading copy of this novel in which Vonnegut and his fictional alter-ego, Kilgore Trout, each touch on stories they would have liked to have told and, in doing so, tell another, about the whole in life being the sum of the parts one attends to. Fine in wrappers.

577. -. Same title. London: Jonathan Cape (1997). The advance reading copy of the first British edition. Fine in wrappers.

578. VONNEGUT, Kurt. Bagombo Snuff Box. NY: Putnam (1999). The uncorrected proof copy of Vonnegut's uncollected short fiction from the early part of his career. Three stories have been revised from their original publication, and Vonnegut provides an introduction. Fine in wrappers.
