Little Man, Little Man
(London), Michael Joseph, (1976). His only children's book, written for his nephew, Tejan. Baldwin created "a microcosm of his concern for our children and our future," with a "picture of New York as it looks to those who are black, poor and less than four feet high." Baldwin was living in France when he wrote it, and it was illustrated by Yoran Cazac, who had never seen Harlem and worked from photographs that Baldwin showed him. The British edition is the true first, preceding the U.S. edition published by Dial. Ahead of its time and considered "experimental," the title quickly went out of print; it was reissued by Duke University Press in 2018. Fine in a very near fine, price-clipped dust jacket.
