After the ship had been locked in polar ice for eighteen months, Albanov, the navigator and 13 others set out by sledge and kayak on a four-month quest to find civilization. Only he and one companion survived; the ship has never been found. This edition has a preface by Krakauer, which is included in this advance copy in typescript form.
