Updike's second book and first novel, nominated for the National Book Award and winner of the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, for a novel which, despite not being a commercial success, was nonetheless "a considerable literary achievement." Signed by the author. With the bookplate of diplomat and ambassador John Moors Cabot on the front flyleaf: Cabot lived on Cape Ann, one town over from Updike. Fine in a near fine dust jacket, with a bit of rubbing to the front panel and a closed but crooked tear to the lower rear panel.
